September is Self-Care Awareness Month, a time to emphasize the importance of mental, emotional, and physical well-being. For individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF), self-care is more than just a wellness trend — it’s a vital part of daily life. Managing CF requires balancing treatments, mental health, nutrition, and overall lifestyle choices to maintain optimal well-being.

What Does Self-Care Look Like for the CF Community?

Self-care with CF involves intentional steps to prioritize lung health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. This includes:

Daily Treatment Adherence

  • Staying consistent with airway clearance techniques (vest therapy, nebulizers, etc.).
  • Taking enzymes, vitamins, and prescribed medications as directed.
  • Scheduling regular CF clinic visits to monitor health and adjust treatments as needed.

Mental and Emotional Well-Being

  • Practicing mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing to manage stress.
  • Seeking therapy or support groups to connect with others navigating CF.
  • Setting healthy boundaries to prevent burnout and emotional fatigue.

Nutrition and Physical Activity

  • Consuming high-calorie, nutrient-dense foods to maintain weight and lung function.
  • Staying hydrated to prevent mucus buildup and maintain energy levels.
  • Engaging in light to moderate exercise, such as walking, yoga, or strength training, to support lung function and overall health.

Rest and Recovery

  • Prioritizing sleep hygiene by creating a relaxing nighttime routine.
  • Listening to your body and taking breaks when needed.
  • Allowing time for hobbies and activities that bring joy and relaxation.

The Importance of Self-Advocacy

Practicing self-care also means advocating for your own health and well-being. This includes:

  • Communicating openly with healthcare providers about symptoms and concerns.
  • Requesting reasonable accommodations at work or school to balance CF care.
  • Educating friends, family, and colleagues about CF to build a supportive community.
