Raising Awareness for Men in the CF Community

June is Men’s Health Month and World Fertility Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to spotlight the unique health challenges faced by men with cystic fibrosis (CF). While CF is widely recognized for its effects on the respiratory and digestive systems, its impact on men’s reproductive health and overall well-being is often less discussed. This month, we aim to raise awareness, provide education, and advocate for better healthcare solutions for men in the CF community.

Fertility Challenges in Men with CF

One of the most significant yet under-discussed aspects of CF in men is its impact on fertility. Approximately 98% of men with CF are infertile due to congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) — a condition in which the tubes that transport sperm do not develop properly. However, infertility does not mean sterility, and men with CF still have options for biological parenthood.

Fertility Options for Men with CF

  • Sperm Retrieval Procedures: Techniques like testicular sperm extraction (TESE) can retrieve viable sperm for assisted reproductive technologies (ART).
  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a common method for men with CF who wish to have biological children.
  • Genetic Counseling: Since CF is a genetic condition, couples considering parenthood should consult a genetic counselor to understand inheritance risks and testing options.
  • Alternative Family-Building Methods: Adoption and sperm donation are also options for men with CF who wish to start a family.

Overall Men’s Health and CF

Beyond fertility, men with CF face additional health concerns that require proactive management. These include:

  • Bone Health: CF-related malabsorption can lead to osteoporosis, making bone density screenings essential.
  • Hormonal Imbalances: Low testosterone levels can affect energy, muscle mass, and libido. Regular endocrine check-ups can help manage these issues.
  • Mental Health: Living with a chronic illness can contribute to anxiety and depression. Seeking mental health support is vital to overall well-being.
  • Sexual Health: Issues such as erectile dysfunction or reduced libido may arise due to hormonal imbalances or the physical strain of managing CF.

Taking Action for Men’s Health

Men with CF can take proactive steps to maintain their health by:

  • Scheduling regular check-ups with specialists who understand CF-related complications.
  • Discussing fertility options early with a CF care team and reproductive specialists.
  • Prioritizing mental and emotional well-being by seeking therapy or joining support groups.
  • Focusing on nutrition and exercise to support overall health and lung function.
